SEED is a global partnership promoting entrepreneurship for sustainable development.
Founded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, SEED supports innovative small-scale and locally driven enterprises in developing countries which integrate social and environmental benefits into their business model. The aim is to facilitate the establishment and growth of these enterprises and to help them to maximise their contribution to their local economies and communities.
The overall objective for the SEED Executive Director is to lead and grow SEED, thereby ensuring that SEED is a recognised player in contributing to the transition to sustainable development in developing countries. The Executive Director engages at international and national levels through the annual SEED Awards for social and environmental enterprises as well as by guiding SEED’s capacity building for enterprises, SEED’s training business development service providers, and SEED’s gathering evidence about barriers and enablers and the impacts of such enterprises.
The Executive Director is responsible for:
- the strategic development and delivery of SEED, ensuring its relevance to the ongoing and emerging policy issues,
- raising funds and expanding the donor base to enable SEED to continuously extend and broaden its programme,
- pursuing and exploiting multiple policy, outreach and partnership opportunities, including through SEED events such as country specific symposia.
- the organisation and management of the SEED Secretariat, and efficient and effective collaboration between the Secretariat and adelphi.
The Executive Director is accountable to the SEED Board, works hand-in-glove and on a day-to-day basis with the Director of Operations at SEED’s host institution, adelphi research and closely with UNEP’s Technology, Industry and Economics Division (DTIE). An understanding of and ability to work with senior representatives from government, major international institutions, stakeholder groups, and entrepreneurs is central to success in this role.
