2019 Data4Change Workshop For NGOs and CSOs

2019 Data4Change Workshop For NGOs and CSOs

Since 2014, more than 200 people from over 40 countries have attended DATA4CHANGE flagship events in London, Beirut and Kampala. Applications are now open to attend our 2019 event, which will be held at Nairobi Garage. We’re very excited to have Code for Africa on board as our event partner.

DATA4CHANGE is a London-based non-profit that connects civil society with global creatives, supporting them to tell stories with data and forge real change. Our flagship events are 5-day residentials based in exciting locations around the world.

Through a competitive process that begins with this open call for applications, we will select four civil society organisations (CSOs) working on themes relating to digital rights, internet freedom and/or freedom of expression online to participate in D4C Nairobi. Each participating organisation will be matched with a team of industry experts covering the disciplines of data analysis, journalism, graphic design, and web development.

The application timeline

Phase One: Open Call.

Apply early and beat the crowd! During this phase we accept applications from interested civil society organisations. On a rolling basis we make contact with each applicant to begin the process of creating our shortlist, so the earlier you apply, the earlier we can assess your eligibility. As soon as you’ve applied, our team will begin reviewing your application. If we decide to progress your application to Phase Two, we’ll be in contact to arrange a suitable time to interview you.

Phase Two: Interviews.

During the video interview we’ll talk about your proposed theme, and ask about your previous work. We’ll want to ask you about the strategic priorities of your organisation and find out how the theme you’ve proposed fits in with them. We’ll also take the time to describe in detail what you could expect from a DATA4CHANGE flagship event, and answer any questions you might have. We like to know that your colleagues support the proposal and will rally around the outcome of the event, so we may ask you to identify a key decision-maker from your organisation that can join us for the interview too.

Phase Three: Data Dive.

If your organisation is one of the lucky four selected to attend, you’ll have hands-on support from DATA4CHANGE and Code for Africa to help you prepare your material for the event. We’ll work with you to identify sources of data, clean any datasets you may already have and get them ready for the event, and prepare briefing documents for your team. This is so you’ll have the best chance of a successful outcome during the event.

BENEFITS

  • Full scholarship for you and a colleague to attend the workshop, including travel, accommodation, and in-country costs

CSO APPLICATIONS CLOSE 5PM GMT, THURSDAY, 31 JANUARY 2019

REQUIREMENTS

Your proposal must cover at least one of the following countries:

East Africa – Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda

Southern Africa – Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe

West Africa – Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone

Middle East & Central Asia – Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan

If you are considering applying, please discuss your application with your colleagues prior to submission, as we only accept one application per organisation per event. It is very important that your organisation supports your participation. If you make it through to the final round of the selection process, DATA4CHANGE will work with you to identify a second suitable participant from your organisation, as all selected CSOs are offered two places at the event.

Attending DATA4CHANGE requires you to invest a significant time commitment, as you will need to be able to attend the full 5 days of the event (plus any additional travel time), and take part in the pre-event preparations.

Applications to attend DATA4CHANGE are reviewed by a board of advisers and the competition is very tough. If you are accepted, you and a colleague will receive a full scholarship to attend the event.
