This virtual summit is an intensive program designed for African young adults seeking to effectively respond to the most pressing challenges of unemployment, specifically responding to depression. In this summit’s program, participants will be taken through the myths surrounding mental health, the manifestations of depression, which vary from one to person to another, the objective response to depression, the processes and procedure options in overcoming depression, and after identifying their individual strengths, pin-point the ways that their current positions are transferrable to assist others undergoing but in denial of depression. To effectively achieve the ends of this virtual summit, we have invited and continue to invite a diversity of discussants to better attract different experiences and perspectives on the topic, who shall be led and moderated by Ms. Njoki Maina, a psychology specialist based in Nairobi, Kenya.

While Africa is famous for its rich cultural diversity and demographic dividend, depression is bedeviling the continent with statistics showing an increased number of depressed people across the continent, and even though depression is a widespread issue affecting all global citizens, depression levels in Africa are on the increase.

Counselling and mental health advice in coaching and/or consulting tend to focus on the theoretical side of depression to synthesize abstract opinions and advance arguments through case study analysis. Frequently missing in this advice formula are the concrete experiences and real-life encounters that African young adults struggling to achieve the state of and perspectives on the topic,”adulthood” amidst the struggles with unemployment. In absence of such direct industry encounters, African young adults are left to determine how aspects of depression advice can lend themselves to support their real day-to-day struggles. This is a highly fraught and frustrating effort.

Depressed people cannot be productive and this forestalls the continent’s economic development. Before tackling depression, it is important to know the 5 major causes of depression among African young adults:

  1. Low Economic Status
  2. Lack of Employment
  3. High Infant Mortality Rate
  4. High Cost of Living
  5. Inequality and Social Vices

Participant Learning Goals:

  • Map out and debunk the various myths surrounding depression amongst young adults;
  • Understand how shifting the mindset on depression and mental health could affect the delivery and capacity to succeed, and how personal and professional relationships might affect your progression;
  • Identify how your strengths can play into helping out others going through depression but in denial of the same;
  • Understand the different coping mechanisms from different experiences and perspectives so you are capable of identifying what works best for you.

Who should attend:

  • Open to African young adults within or with-out the continent.
  • Depending on availability of complementary tickets, this virtual summit is also available for non-African descent young adults interested in the topic.
